Before Reading
Scan the selection: read the title and the nonfiction conventions.
Read the heading(s). The heading is a hint of what the next paragraph/section is about. The author is saying, “I am going to tell you about…”

50 Essential Lessons by Jim Burke is an awesome resource! Two lessons are about Summarization. Lesson 22: Summarize and Lesson 23: Write an Effective Paragraph are both lessons that I refer to in this blog post. Jim Burke deserves all the credit! I recommend Jim’s 50 lessons to all HS teachers (college too). They work.

Summarizing is explained really well in Explaining Reading by Gerald Duffy.
Sometimes summarizing and determining the main idea are confused. Summarizing is when students create a brief retelling of an entire text. Determining the main idea is when students find the one single important idea.

This group of students is working through the Somebody Wanted But So summary strategy with their first grade teacher. All the other first graders were working independently on this strategy today since the teacher had already taught the strategy effectively.
