Writing A List of Food for Grocery Shopping or for a Recipe

http://www.jmeacham.com/writers.workshop/list.making/list.making.htm    Jessica writes several list lessons on her site.

Teacher:  Sometimes we make a list of food when we go to the grocery store.  Have you ever seen mom or dad write a list of food to help them remember what to buy at the store?  Usually parents write a list to help them remember specific items for a recipe or special foods that the family wants to eat this week.

Teacher says, “A list is a tool that people use to help them remember something.”

Teacher might read a book, bunny_cakes.  Teacher then asks, “What did Max need to write before making the cake?  What was on his list that he wrote?” Students help generate the list of items that Max needs to make cake and then the teacher records the list.  (If this is not the perfect book for your classroom, you might decide to read another one.)

Teacher Deb says, “Tonight I am going to make spaghetti for my family.  I am going to make a list of items I need to buy at the grocery store tonight on my way home.”   Teacher talks and writes:

spaghetti noodles

spaghetti sauce

butter

cheese

Teacher Deb says, “I am looking forward to eating delicious spaghetti with my family tonight.”
