Orally blends syllables or onset-rimes.
Segments syllables.
Identifies initial sounds.
Orally blends individual phonemes.
Segments individual sounds in words.
Identifies final sounds in words.
Blends three- to four-phoneme words.
Identifies medial sound in one-syllable words.
Teachers make wise instructional decisions about what phonemic awareness skills to teach and what order to teach them in. Based on what the student knows, the teacher decides what and where to begin instruction.
